Companies don't announce splits randomly. There are clear signals that tend to precede split announcements:
Companies with share prices above $500–$1,000 are the most common split candidates. In 2025, analyst watch lists frequently mention Eli Lilly (LLY), Netflix (NFLX), and Booking Holdings (BKNG) as companies whose price levels historically precede splits. However, none of these are confirmed — companies like Berkshire Hathaway intentionally avoid splits.
The most reliable sources are: (1) the company's official investor relations website, (2) SEC EDGAR 8-K filings at sec.gov, and (3) financial data providers like Nasdaq.com which maintain a stock split calendar. Announcements on social media or news sites can be delayed or inaccurate.
Stock splits do not trigger a taxable event. Your total cost basis remains the same, but it is spread across more shares. For example, if you paid $1,000 for 1 share and it does a 4-for-1 split, your cost basis becomes $250 per share across 4 shares. Your holding period is also unchanged. See our cost basis calculator for split adjustments.
This is a common question but the split itself shouldn't change your decision — it doesn't create or destroy value. What matters is your view of the company's fundamentals. That said, research suggests stocks often see positive price momentum in the weeks after a split announcement is made (before the split occurs), as the news attracts attention and buying.
